Annunciation Greek Orthodox Greek School

At Greek School, our mission is to provide a supportive, engaging and fun environment in which our teachers can systematically introduce students to our Greek language, culture, history, and faith.  We aim to create strong partnerships with our families, our parish, and our community, while developing our childrens’ Modern Greek Language skills, and exposing them to opportunities for oral and written communication, as well as traditional celebrations.

About Greek School

Our Greek School has been a long-lasting Saturday program, where children come to learn the Greek Language and get exposed to our Greek history, heritage, and culture.

Our program serves as a way to promote and preserve the Greek language and culture in our parish and the Rochester, NY area where Greek-speaking families exist.

The curriculum and courses focus on vocabulary, reading, writing, grammar, and speaking in Greek, and incorporate content from our Greek history, literature, and culture.

The objectives of our programs are:

  • To offer learning opportunities that build our children’s language skills
  • To instill our Greek heritage and culture throughout the children’s participation to Greek School
  • To celebrate our culture and Orthodox faith, and
  • Create life-long friendships

Benefits of Greek School

One of the key benefits of the Greek language school program is the opportunity for students to learn and appreciate the Greek language and culture. Whether students come from Greek-speaking backgrounds or not, the program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to teach students the Greek language, as well as Greek history, literature, and culture. By learning the Greek language, students can connect with their cultural roots and gain a deeper understanding of the history and traditions of Greece.

The program provides a space for students to meet and interact with others who share their cultural background or interest in Greek language and culture. By participating in the program, students can develop a sense of community and belonging, and also learn to promote multiculturalism and diversity in their larger community. Through learning about and appreciating our own culture, we can help to build bridges between different cultural groups and promote understanding, inclusion and belonging.

Through our curriculum, lessons, and exposure to traditional events we help the children explore and connect with their cultural heritage. By learning about the language, history, and traditions of Greece, they can gain a deeper appreciation of their family’s background, and help preserve the Greek language and culture for future generations.

Learning a second language has been shown to have cognitive benefits, and the Greek language school program is no exception. Studies have shown that learning a second language can improve memory, cognitive function, and even delay the onset of dementia. By learning the Greek language, our students can reap these cognitive benefits and develop a valuable skill that can serve them well in their personal and professional lives. Once in 7th grade in Greek School, students can also opt in to taking the Regents Exam and receive high-school credits!

If you plan to travel to Greece or other parts of the Greek-speaking world, attending our Greek school can help you better navigate those experiences and proudly communicate with your yiayia, papou, theia and theio!!! Lastly, you will better understand and truly appreciate the places you visit!
